Mid-Century Modern.
This refurbished mid-century modern home sits in a quiet Birmingham neighborhood, nestled at the edge of a preserved natural parkway with a walk-out lower level. Knitting the architecture with the natural site challenged the landscape architect.
The front approach features a plaza driveway that funnels visitors into a courtyard. The stone mason saved parts of the original walls, adding to them with salvaged stone. The concrete paver driveway, in a simple stacked bond pattern with contrasting accent bands, aligns with the architecture.
The main floor level extends outward and transforms into an elevated deck, complete with a swimming pool. The grade change allows a dramatic infinity edge at arm’s length of towering evergreen trees.
The skillful use of dry-stacked natural stone, grading, and plant material knit this site together. The view from the lower-level pathway captures the architecture merging with nature.
